Christopher Columbus + Spice Trade = MY SUCCESS

Christopher Columbus is one of my inspirations. His great determination to explore really inspired me. His voyages are what found the New World. I had found North America, which I consider a great success. I also praise Columbus on how he stuck to his belief that he reached Indies in Asia. It shows that he believes in himself. This taught me so many things. Christopher Columbus, not only do your actions inspire my explorations, but they teach me valuable lessons.
What was up with the Spice Trade? I mean everyone going to the Indies to find spices. All those people wanted money. Those explorers didn't want to explore, they wanted the fortune. But it does have its good side. It did create more explorers because a lot of people were going out to sea to find the spices. This could have possibly started the era of exploration. I really do think that is something positive to look at. So, the Spice trade triggered people's want to sail and explore. All in all, I believe that both Christopher Columbus and the Spice Trade both helped the establishment of exploration.

Thank You King Henry VII!

King Henry VII, I would like to thank you personally for helping me pursue my dream. Without your support I would have never been able to discover North America. Your license has given me many memories that I will remember. Your overall support has given me the opportunity to finally go out and explore. Never in my life would I have ever known that I would become a famous explorer! Your patent had given me a great relief to know that I can sail. Not only I can sail, but my sons can also sail too. So, they can pursue the dream of exploring the world just like me. Once again, thank you for your kind support.

My Third Voyage

I've prepared for my third voyage for some time now. This time Lancelot Thirkill, Thomas Bradley, and John Cair will accompany me on my journey. We had left from Bristol with five ships this time. We were hoping to take all the goods in the ships and trade them to the people of the New World. This would bring enormous profits to England. When we were on our journey, we were hit by a terrible storm. This left only Lancelot Thirkill and I alive. We ended up back at Bristol. The others did not make it since their ships were lost at sea. I was torn. Not only did I lose my crew, but I felt like I lost my pride. I was ready to go out to sea, but my hopes were crushed. I lost more than I gained. I had let down England when they gave me a chance. But, it was not my fault right? I mean the storm was probably the main cause for this disaster. I still don't know why I feel like it is all my fault. I don't think I can carry on with more expeditions. I am greatly depressed right now.

Second Voyage!

Well, I just came back from my second voyage. I knew I was going to redeem myself! This time, I had a small ship, more supplies, and a better crew. And this time, the weather was not terrible. Everything was perfect! Well, we had a long journey, but it was well worth it. We made it to the New World! I claimed the land England's and recognized the authority of the Roman Catholic Church. The feeling inside me was just a great joy. One of my crew members even stated,"the sea there is swarming with fish, which can be taken not only with the net, but in baskets let down with a stone, so that it sinks in the water." There was that many fish in the New World! I mean, I was overjoyed to finally realize that I discovered North America. That would give me the fame and fortune I always dreamed of having. Not only does this put me up there with the greatest explorers, this expedition kindled my desire to go on another voyage. I am going to start thinking about what to do next. So, there is much more to come!

My First Voyage

Well, my first voyage was a total disaster. I ended up turning back and returning to Bristol. I accomplished nothing. My small ship, small crew, and a shortage of supplies caused me much trouble. On top of that, the bad weather created the worst conditions to sail in. We didn't even make it to Hy-Brazil, the island I wanted to go to. Their brazilwood is extremely valuable. Not only would it bring me wealth, but it would have brought me fame. Rediscovering an island that was lost by Bristol a long time ago would be the biggest story! If only I had made it there, then I would have been famous and rich. Well, we tried our best. At least I did, while my crew confused me. However, I will come prepared next time. I promise there will be a second voyage very soon.

My Background

Hi, I'm Giovanni Caboto, better known as John Cabot. In 1450, I was born is Genoa, Italy. In 1474, I married Mattea and had three sons, Ludivico, Sebastiano, and Sancto. In 1476, I was made a Venetian citizen after living in Venice since 1461. I soon became involved with the trade in Venice which expanded my great knowledge. However, my basic knowledge came from my father, Gulio Caboto. His teachings about the spice trade have always interested me. Life was not always smooth sailing for me. I had many financial issues in the late 1480s. I fled Venice and went from place to place. In Valencia, I was almost arrested by sending a letter to the authorities. There, I proposed a new plans to improve the harbour, but they were rejected. Then, in 1494, I went to Seville where I had wanted to build a stone bridge over the Guadalquivir river. However, this was canceled by the City Council. In 1495, I had finally settled down in England. There I proposed an idea of finding a shorter route to "the Indies." In 1496, I went straight to Bristol to seek financial aid to fund my new idea. The greatest day for me was on March 5, 1496 when King Henry VII of England gave me permission to explore under the support England. In 1497, I started my first voyage which was a total disaster. I had one ship, a bad crew, shortage of supplies, and to top it off, bad weather. With all these complications, I headed back to England. On my second voyage, I sailed to North America. So, I made sure I kept some entries of what happened. In one of them, I wrote, "This year, on St. John the Baptist's Day, the land of America was found by the Merchants of the Bristow in a shippe of Bristowe, called the Mathew; the which said the ship departed from the port of Bristowe, the second day of May, and came home again the 6th of August next following." I also wrote letters to the Duke of Milan and Christopher Columbus. Although this sounds exciting, my journey to North America was painful. I had a small ship, small crew, and few supplies to last me the voyage. When I arrived, I helped claim the land as England's and recognized the Roman Catholic Church. I had spent some time exploring the coast. There I found so much fish off the coast! Later, I returned back to Bristol on August 6. On August 10, I was rewarded for my finding by the King. In March and April of 1498, the King gave loans to Lancelot Thirkill of London, Thomas Bradley, and John Cair, who were to accompany me on my new expedition. I was thrilled. We had departed with five ships this time, much better than my first two expeditions. Only Lancelot Thirkill and I made it back safely. Lancelot came back in 1501 while I returned in 1500. My other crew was lost at sea. However, we did discover a new part of the Americas, but it was Spanish territory.
